Afternoon-evening Rallycross at Knockhill

The British Rallycross Championship will make its annual appearance in Scotland on May 12 when Knockhill racing Circuit hosts a unique day-into-evening event, racing starting at 1pm and continuing through to 8pm.

For Supercar racers in the Monster Energy MSA British Rallycross Championship, in association with MaKTraK, the Knockhill event is the third points scoring event of the year and the series is led by London-based Irishman Ollie O'Donovan. The British champion in 2007, O'Donovan returned to the series this year and was immediately successful, winning round one and scoring points during the European championship event at easter that provided round two of the British Rallycross Championship (BRC).

Last year's British championship event at Knockhill was the penultimate and decisive round of the series. Julian Godfrey (Heathfield) claimed his first outright victory and with it put his name to the title. After two events, Godfrey is placed fourth in the 2012 series, a spin in the final of round one costing him places and valuable points. Third among the BRC racers in round two, Godfrey returns to the scene of last year's breakthrough win knowing that he needs to score heavily in order to prevent O'Donovan from extending his advantage.

Local Heroes

Scottish drivers taking part in the event include Marc Scott (Dumfries) who drives an RX150 and placed third in the 2011 championship. Embroiled in an intense battle during the A final of the opening round of the championship at Lydden in March, Scott moved from fourth to third with the finish line in sight and will continue his championship campaign on home ground at Knockhill.

Three Scotsmen start in the Clubmans Rallycross Championship, among them reigning champion Ian Biagi (Dumfries) who will race his venerable Mini. Challenged by more powerful cars on a dry day in the opening round of the series at Lydden, Biagi opened his title defence with fifth place and has some ground to make up entering his home event. Joining Biagi in the Clubmans championship are father and son pairing Dave and Jim Black (Berwick). A veteran of Rallycross and autocross events in Scotland and the north of England, Dave Black will race his Vauxhall Astra GTE while Jim drives a Vauxhall Corsa, the pair making their first Rallycross appearance of the year.

Strong Supporting Cast

Alongside the Supercar class the event has a full supporting programme, the action led by the MSA Supernational Championship. An eclectic championship that admits two-wheel drive cars of all shapes and sizes, round one provided great racing as Irishman Ian O'Connell (Dublin) arrived fresh from a successful winter in the Irish championship and bagged his first British event win with his Lotus Exige. Ash Simpson (York) was locked in combat with Supernational champion James Bird's (Midhurst) Renault ClioSport V6 and took second place in another Exige, Devonian Steve Cozens taking fourth in his Lotus.

One-make racing can be relied upon to deliver close racing, and that's true of the Swift Sport Championship, the A final for which had three different leaders before the first lap was completed in the opening round. At the start of his second year in Rallycross former oval racer Richard Norman (West Malling) emerged from the pack to take the victory, Jonny Bean (Northallerton) and Chris Mullen (Leeds) following him home and each posting a personal best finish ahead of pre-season favourite Tony Lynch (Wigan) who finished fourth.

The MSA Junior Rallycross Championship (for 14-16 year-olds) also had a first time winner with James Ross (Watford) taking victory in his first Rallycross event. Ross is set to continue in the championship at Knockhill but is sure to face a renewed challenge from defending champion Aidan Hills (Lancing) who was fastest in the class, but lost out to his new rival in the final. The new Super1600 class, Hot Hatch, BMW MINI, the RX150 "off-road buggies" and the 'entry point' Clubmans Rallycross Championship are also on the bill at Knockhill.
