The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship is the most important race championship in the UK, with a year history dating back to 1958. Cars are based on production models (i.e. Honda Civic, Ford Focus etc.) but with scope for development of suspension, engines and gearboxes. New 2012 regulations mean that the playing field will be fairer for all teams, so expect the unexpected in the MSA British Touring Car Championship for 2012.

This is the senior of Ginetta’s two BTCC support categories with more experienced drivers competing in faster, more powerful sportscars compared to the youngsters in the Junior field. Ginetta has re-branded the series the GT Supercup for 2011/12 when it will be open to two of its car – the 3.5-litre G50 that has raced as a stand-alone category in recent seasons and its brand new successor, the even more powerful 3.7-litre G55 that will be the headline class.

Ginetta Junior Championship

The championship is for young drivers aged 14 to 17 and, having joined the BTCC's support package in 2008, has now truly emerged as the UK’s top junior race championship. The G40 model is a two-seater sportscar, powered by a 1800cc Zetec engine and are identicla in performance. This ensures the racing is both action-packed and highly entertaining for the watching crowds and TV audiences

The Championship is finely balanced, with Knockhill's own Gordon Shedden sitting in 2nd position. Flash will be going all out to leave Knockhill in the Championship lead ahead of his own team-mate, Matt Neal and 2010 Champion, Jason Plato. Gordon knows the Circuit well and will be pushing for podium finishes come Sunday.

Prediction - If he hits the front, no-one will catch him. Needs a strong weekend to keep his title challenge on course.

Inverness businessman Dave Newsham currently lies an impressive 13th in his first season in Touring cars. The Special Tuning Racing entered SEAT Leon will be a strong contender here as the SEAT model has previously won at Knockhill, as has Dave in both the Renault Clio Cup and Legends.

Prediction - Another strong performance expected and here's hoping of a podium.

2010 BTCC Champion

Jason Plato can best be described as 'marmite' - you either love him or you hate him! One thing is for sure though, Jason's will to win and determination burn as strong as ever. Plato has enjoyed success at Knockhill in various cars over the years. Most notably when he dominated proceedings in his deisel SEAT Leon. In the Cruze however, Plato pulled off a stunning overtaking masterclass last year taking the Chevy from the rear of the pack to a podium slot in the final race. He'll be tough to beat this weekend.

Prediction - He'll be hell bent on winning, just like at every other BTCC weekend!

Double BTCC Champion

Another seasoned BTCC veteran and former double Champion. Both Neal and Plato can justifiably claim to be the toughest competitors on the BTCC grid and between them there is no 'love lost'. Already this year there has been a few racing incidents, expect more of the same at Knockhill as these two fierce rivals look to re-ignite their Championship challenges.

Prediction - Broken hand or not, Neal will be in the thick of the action and the points.

Championship Leader

Make no mistake - Mat Jackson sits at the top of the Championship table on merit. 4 race wins already this year in his Airwaves Ford Focus, which has certainly put the wind up the factory teams. Jackson has served his BTCC apprenticeship and also has a good record at Knockhill, having won here when he partnered Plato in the Chevrolet team. Jackson has had a handy knack of winning the final race of the day all season, so don't bet against him being in front come 5.10pm on Sunday night.

Prediction - Needs to pull together a string of good results to remain in 1st place.

Rory heads the Celtic Speed team that features Tommy Dreelan and George Brewster and has put in some stunning performances this season in the Porsche Cup, including an outing at the world famous Nurburgring in Germany.

Prediction - Will be pushing for Pro-Am1 victory and who knows could get a podium on-the-road.

Marino Franchitti, a former Knockhill employee and reigning ALMS Championship LMP1 Champion with his Highcroft Racing stable will be a surprise addition to the line-up this weekend. The Scot, returns to his home track after a ten year absence to take part in the Ginetta GT Supercup. Franchitti will be driving the guest Ginetta G55 after a personal invitation from Ginetta president Lawrence Tomlinson. Who knows, he may even have his famous brother Dario and cousin Paul DiResta in toe. Lining up alongside Marino will be fellow Scot, Michael Doyle. The last time Michael raced at Knockhill was in the British Touring Cars a few years ago.

Prediction - Seasoned sportscar racer, should be in amongst it!
